Josiah Lewis Spiller

Josiah Spiller had joined the RAFVR sometime in 1939 and his commission to Pilot Officer on probation from LAC rank, effective from 14th January 1940 was gazetted on 6th February of that year.  He served in various bomber squadrons as an air-gunner between 27th January 1940 and 4th October 1941 during which time he was promoted to F/O in January 1941 and flew a total of 28 operations and 169 other flights..

Doc Bailey

'Doc' Bailey – Scientist

'Doc' Bailey was 'a scientist' at the Geological Museum who reputedly stalked the building at night with a torch and a gun. Alma Coombes was always fearful that he would shoot someone. In his letter to Lilian in November 1943 Jimmie makes reference

Frank Law

Frank Law's name crops up on several occasions in Jim Ives' flying log-book.

Later on, when Jim's crew was split-up Sgt Donald Bell, Jim's flight engineer, was posted to 103 Squadron

Sgt - John Minty (Jock)

News from Massachusetts, USA has confirmed that Sgt 'Jock' Minty the Ives crew's first navigator at 30OTU was another character with an interesting background. John Ross Minty's father – John Ross Minty snr originally hailed from Aberdeenshire but established a hardwood export business in Belize, British Honduras, Central America.

Evander William C Hay

On 26/27th August 1944

Flt Lt R Etchells’s Lancaster was ‘Badly shot about by a Ju88’ over Kiel, ‘but which in turn was last seen going down crippled by the return fire. Soon after the engagement the Lancaster was ditched in the North Sea. There followed an exacting rescue operation involving aircraft, a Danish fishing vessel and an ASR launch before the crew were brought home to Grimsby.

P/O John Athelstan Crabtree


Many thanks to Keith Crabtree for telling me about his elder brother P/O John Athelstan Crabtree – known in close family circles as 'Athel'.

After the outbreak of the war John Crabtree joined the Home Guard, but his interest was in flying aeroplanes and Keith  recalls reading Athel's do-it-yourself book 'Teach Yourself to Fly'
